Just Because It's Essential Doesn't Make It Deductible

The Three Questions Every Deduction Must Answer

Every accountant hears it.

"I have to wear a suit to see clients."
"The army makes me keep my hair short."
"I pay parking fines because there's nowhere else to stop."
"I've put the business logo on my car."

And in many cases, all of those statements are true. The expense may be unavoidable. It may genuinely help you do your job. You might even feel you couldn't work without it. But that doesn't automatically make it tax deductible.

That's the part that often catches people by surprise. There isn't a rule in tax law that says an expense is deductible simply because it's essential for work. Whether you can claim it comes down to a few key tests, and plenty of expenses pass the first one but fail the others.

Before claiming a deduction, it's worth asking three important questions.

If you're unsure whether an expense is deductible, it's worth having the conversation before lodging your return. A quick discussion can provide clarity, help you avoid mistakes and ensure you're claiming everything you're entitled to with confidence.

Think Beyond Today's Tax Outcome

When the draft legislation for the trust minimum tax was released, it came with a reassurance: if you do not want to restructure, you can simply make an election instead — no restructure, and no state stamp duty.
